Report
With the season drawing to close, Juniors final game saw them take the short trip to face title chasing Insulators in Paddock Wood.
Juniors started the brighter of the two sides but were unable to make their possession count, and the hosts soon took the lead. A defensive error allowed the striker time on the ball and he laid it back to the onrushing James Philpott on the edge of the box who smashed the ball home.
Juniors weren’t behind for long as Faulkner picked the ball up and found himself through on goal, squaring it for Jennings who finished with a fine chip over the keeper.
Juniors should have taken the lead when a fine ball into the box was met by Ryder on the volley, but the centre half was unable to get the ball the right side of the post.
Both teams were playing some nice football, but it was a dubious decision that nearly lead to the next goal. A corner into the box was met by Ryder ahead of the attacker, and it took a fine reflex save from Nichols to prevent the own goal, only for the keeper and his backline to be dismayed to see the ref pointing to the spot, leaving both teams wondering why. Shane Blackman stepped up to take the kick, but somehow managed to hit both posts without the ball crossing the line.
Next to almost take the lead were the visitors with Howell finding his shot cannoning back off the bar to safety.
There was more controversy to follow as Insulators thought they had extended their lead with a shot that seemed to have crossed the line, only for the referee to wave play on and Juniors cleared their lines.
Possession was even, but it was Insulators that were making the most of theirs and they forced Nichols into another save in a goal mouth scramble, stopping the ball with his foot before making a good one on one stop with James Philpott looking to add to his tally.
With the half drawing to close, the hosts retook the lead. Martin Ives found a little extra pace to pass Tony Revell and the full back was only able to bring him down on the touch line. Philpott whipped in a dangerous free kick that eluded everyone and found it’s way into the far corner of the net for his second goal of the game.
The second half carried on in the same vain, both sides playing some nice football, but Juniors only able to muster half chances, the clearest of which fell to Jagelman but the keeper rushed to make the block.
The Insulators midfield were looking for their ever willing runners up to top at every opportunity, and both were working hard, but neither were able to get a clear sight of goal until around the 70 minute when Nichols produced another one on one save getting a big hand up to push the ball over the bar.
Juniors were looking threatening but as so often just failed to make their possession count, and with around 10 minutes remaining, the hosts further extended their lead. A ball over from the left was met with a brilliant volley by Martin Ives, which was only matched by the save from the Juniors keeper pushing the ball round the post. From the resultant corner, Juniors hope came crashing down and Philpott claimed his hat trick, whipping the ball straight in from the dead ball, the Juniors defender leaving his post thinking he could win the header, but misjudging the flight of the ball.
There was time for Juniors to have one last chance, but a fine turn and shot led to a decent stop from the host’s keeper.
The final whistle blew, leaving Juniors languishing in the bottom two of the table, but no one certain which league they would begin their new season in.
