Report
Juniors travelled to face league leaders Hadlow Evolution with a bare 11 again due to work commitments, and a number of those 11 were carrying knocks.
The game started at a high tempo with both sides seeing lots of the ball, and within 5 minutes Juniors had the first chance of the game, a fine ball from Marc Faulkner was headed down by Jagelman but the Hadlow keeper manager to get to the ball and turn it round the post.
After this Hadlow were beginning to just shade the possession, but the game remained very evenly balanced with neither team creating any clear cut chances and Hadlow restricted to long range shots from outside the area.
The pitch was in poor condition and was affecting everyone as it was tricky to play a passing game.
The next real chance fell for the home side as the won the ball from a Juniors free kick and the League’s top scorer found himself through on goal but he took his shot early and Nichols turned the ball round the post.
The home side took the lead midway through the first half, as Juniors gave away a free kick centrally around 25 yards from goal, and Evolution had a touch of fortune. The ball was lifted into the box looking for the head of the target man but ended up floating into the top corner of the net without touching anyone else on its way in.
The goal gave Hadlow confidence and they began playing some very nice passing football but again were only really having pop shots at goal from distance.
Juniors came out for the second half knowing that they would have to improve on their showing from the first 45 minutes if they were to get anything from a game against a very useful team.
Both sides were passing the ball around well but again, neither keeper really had a save to make as the half progressed. For a period of around 20 minutes towards the end of the game, Juniors were dominating as they pushed looking for an equaliser and everyone thought they had it as Scott met the ball on the volley sending his effort just wide.
Juniors domination continued but it was leaving them bare at the back and the well drilled Evolution team were able to break with pace, but some resolute defending from the Revell’s kept them at bay. With barely 5 minutes remaining the visitors won a corner, and sent Nichols up, to cause concern in the opposition box. The ball was half cleared for a throw and the Juniors keeper decided to stay forward, as the ball was played into the box Nichols waited on the 18 yard line. The ball was only headed as far as the Juniors keeper who met it on the volley. Sadly for the East Peckham man his shot was caught well but not with enough power as the Evo’s keeper dived to his left to foil his opposite number. If only the volley had been mishit the likelihood would have been that it would skew above the keeper into the net.
The final whistle blew with Juniors knowing they could play a lot better but still feeling that they had probably done enough to deserve at least a point.EPFC!
