Report
After the disappointment of their first defeat in a long time the previous week, Juniors looked to get back to winning ways as they traveled to face Bexley in the Kent Cup. As always Juniors had a small squad thanks to injuries and work commitments, with the majority of those “fit” players carrying injuries that would normally keep them out if the manager had a bigger squad to choose from.
Juniors started poorly and found themselves behind after around 10 minutes after a mistake by Nichols. The home side earnt a corner that was whipped in towards the neat post, the keeper called for the ball but couldn’t get enough on the ball to divert it and it was bundled in by the attacker.
Within 5 minutes Juniors fell further behind as they failed to clear the ball and the flicked header somehow made it over the line, despite the keeper taking the pace off the ball the man on the line was unable to get to the shot.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors 10 minutes later as Juniors gave away the ball in the middle of the park. The chance may have been started by a Juniors mistake, but the next string of passes and the finish from the Bexley attacker were very good.
Juniors had a chance to hit back straight away and somehow contrived not to get the ball over the line as the Bexley keeper first dropped a cross and then fumbled in the ensuing melee.
Shortly before the half time whistle blew the visitors found themselves back in the game, again the home side didn’t like a whipped corner, and this time Lardner scored direct, the ball hitting the defender on its way, but whether it was already over the line or not remains a matter of debate, with the goal credited to the Juniors top scorer.
As poor as they had been in the first half, Juniors were good in the second. They began the half very brightly, dominating possession but unable to create any clear cut chances. Obviously with Juniors pushing on looking for goals, gaps were left at the back but luckily for the visitors the home tide were unable to make anything of their opportunities.
Green replaced the walking wounded Jennings and within minutes of coming on, created Juniors second goal. Chasing a lost cause down the right, beating the defender to the ball before crossing for Jagelman to head home at the far post. The referee awarding the goal despite a flag from the home side’s linesman.
Juniors were pushing hard and it seemed more likely that Juniors would be the next team to hit the back of the net, sadly this wasn’t to be, as Juniors pushed on looking for the goal that would take the match to extra time and Bexley broke away. Ryder was unable to cut out the long ball forward and Nichols and Tony Revell were left against 3 attackers, with the front man finishing well.
Juniors didn’t let up but the 4th goal was a sucker punch. Juniors out of the Kent Cup for another year and left to concentrate on the league and the Tunbridge Wells Cup.
