Report
Juniors suffered their first ever league defeat at the hands of new boys Eden Rangers.
From the outset it was clear that Eden Rangers were a very well organised and skilful side and were able to play the ball around neatly and sharply.
The away side took the lead around 15 minutes into the game, as one of their passing moves lead to their striker being given time on the ball just outside the box, and his shot from distance sneaked under Nichols’ body.
Juniors began stringing passes together and started having a few sporadic attacks, one such attack led to Lardner hitting a strong shot from outside of the box which sailed just over the bar.
Eden Rangers began to have chances which they were creating from long throws being flicked on. The Eden Rangers striker managed to latch onto a flick and hook a shot over his shoulder towards the far corner, however on this occasion Nichols managed to pull off a fingertip stop.
From the resulting corner, the away side came close to extending their lead further, the corner fell at the feet of the Eden Rangers striker on the edge of the box, and his powerful shot beat everyone, except Tom Revell who somehow managed to clear the ball up and over the bar.
The teams went in at the break with the away side still leading and Juniors knew they were coming up against a good side that were playing well.
Again the away team came out strongly, but it wasn’t long before Juniors managed to draw level. From a floated corner, Meager managed to smash the ball past the Eden keeper at the second attempt, leaving him with no chance as the ball hit the roof of the net.
Juniors then went from being behind to leading within 5 minutes, as a long ball from Ryder was flicked on by Lardner and Jennings lifted the ball over the on rushing keeper with great aplomb.
Just as Juniors seemed to be finding their feet they lost Meager to injury, and without a centre back on the bench were forced into an emergency reshuffle. Jagelman dropped into defence and his midfield role was filled by Matthews. Jennings was also carrying a knock and was replaced by Hayes, and it wasn’t long before Willett’s injury also forced him off.
The changes clearly affected Juniors as Rangers were soon back on terms, a free header from a free kick was planted into the top corner of the net.
Rangers were soon ahead again, as another long throw was flicked on by the strong striker, leaving the substitute midfielder clean through on goal, and he made no mistake, finding the far corner despite a touch from Nichols. 10 minutes later the lead was stretched, almost an exact duplicate of the 3rd goal, another long throw and flick sent the same player through again and this time he smashed the ball into the roof the of net.
As the game drew to a close Juniors’ heads were down and Rangers had more chances to extend their lead but without any final product.
Both teams contributed to a great match, and if Juniors continue to play like they did at times during this match then they should soon be back to winning ways. EPFC!
